Texas – Sen. Ted Cruz is criticizing Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico after comments attributed to Talarico about Christianity sparked backlash among conservative leaders and religious groups.
“James Talarico says Christianity is ‘the most violent religion’ and has done ‘more damage’ than Islam,” Cruz said. “Let that sink in.”
Cruz added that the comments were “not just historically illiterate” but also “a direct insult to millions of Texans whose faith built our churches, charities, schools, and communities.”
The comments cited by Cruz came from a resurfaced discussion involving Talarico’s views on religion, history, and the role of Christianity in society. The remarks have become another point of controversy as Talarico campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas.
According to reports, Talarico has previously discussed the historical impact of Christianity and other religions while criticizing what he describes as the political misuse of faith. Supporters of Talarico argue that his comments are focused on examining institutions, historical actions, and the relationship between religion and power rather than criticizing individual Christians, FOX News reported.
Critics, including Cruz and other Republican figures, argue that the comments go beyond criticism and unfairly characterize Christianity and the millions of people who practice the faith.
The controversy follows other recent criticism of Talarico over comments about Christianity, including a resurfaced interview in which he said, “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity.” Talarico has argued that those remarks were aimed at criticizing hypocrisy and the use of religion in politics, not rejecting Christianity itself.

Talarico, a Democratic state representative and former teacher, has frequently spoken about his Christian faith during his political career. He has described his beliefs as a major influence on his views about service, compassion, and helping others.
The debate over his comments comes as the Texas Senate race continues to attract national attention. Republican candidates and conservative groups have increasingly focused on Talarico’s statements about religion as they seek to define him for voters.
Supporters of Talarico say his approach represents a different interpretation of Christianity and argue that his critics are taking individual comments out of their broader context.
The dispute has also highlighted a larger political divide in Texas over the role of religion in public life, including how elected officials discuss faith, history, and policy.
Cruz’s criticism adds to the growing national attention surrounding the race, with both sides using the controversy to appeal to voters ahead of the election.
The Talarico campaign has continued to emphasize his background, faith, and policy priorities while pushing back against what it describes as misleading attacks from political opponents.
