Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions have unveiled plans to introduce federal legislation creating Agriculture Freedom Zones (AFZs) nationwide.
The voluntary, incentive-based program is designed to protect prime farmland, strengthen national food security, and encourage responsible development.
AFZs would steer resource-intensive projects, such as data centers and renewable energy facilities, toward areas less suited for productive agriculture, while offering targeted tax incentives to developers.
Commissioner Miller and Rep. Sessions emphasized the importance of preserving farmland and water resources for the nation’s farmers, ranchers, and rural communities, framing the legislation as a strategic effort to balance economic growth with long-term agricultural protection.
