Texas – On the evening of June 9, 2025, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in coordination with the Austin Police Department, responded to a planned and widely publicized protest held within the Texas State Capitol Complex.

The protest began around 7:00 p.m. near the Capitol building, located within the 46 square-block area of Downtown Austin that DPS is responsible for protecting.

During the response, DPS officers arrested five individuals on charges including felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest, assault by contact, and public intoxication. The arrested individuals, now booked into the Travis County Jail, are:

  • Alvin Jarret Talley, 23, charged with felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest

  • Hiram Gilberto Garcia, 27, charged with resisting arrest

  • Zakk Wylde Bonham, 22, charged with felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest

  • Luis Davila, 21, charged with felony criminal mischief

  • William Haraway, 50, charged with assault by contact and public intoxication

To maintain order and ensure the safety of officers, DPS personnel deployed tear gas and pepper ball projectiles during the event. While operational details remain confidential, DPS emphasized its ongoing collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, including APD, to protect citizens, state property, and uphold the constitutional rights of individuals to assemble and express free speech safely.
