Texas – “Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by a broken politics that you did not vote at all,” Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa wrote in a statement posted on X after her election victory.

“Hear what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you. And as your governor, I will never forget it,” she continued, promising there would be “no special set of rules for the wealthy and powerful” and no looking the other way when members of her own political party do something wrong.

Hinojosa’s message came after she defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the November 3 election, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the Texas governor’s office and preventing Abbott from securing a fourth consecutive term.

The Texas Tribune reported that Abbott conceded Tuesday night after calling Hinojosa to congratulate her. The Associated Press called the race in Hinojosa’s favor, marking a historic Democratic victory in a state where Republicans had dominated statewide elections for decades.

Hinojosa will become the first Latina governor of Texas and the first Democrat to occupy the governor’s mansion since Ann Richards left office in 1995. The result also marks the first time a Democrat has won the Texas governor’s race since 1990. In her post-election message, Hinojosa emphasized that her victory should not be interpreted as permission to govern without accountability. She described the trust voters placed in her as a responsibility rather than a blank check, promising to hold members of her own party to the same standards as political opponents.

“The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility. And I intend to earn it every single day,” she wrote.

The incoming governor also promised to reject political favoritism and corruption regardless of which party is responsible. Her remarks echoed a central theme of her campaign, which focused on public education, affordability and reducing the influence of wealthy donors and special interests in state government.

According to Axios, Hinojosa made Abbott’s private school voucher program and his record on public education major targets during the campaign. She also campaigned on strengthening public schools and addressing the rising cost of living for Texas families. The Texas Tribune reported that Hinojosa, a fifth-term state representative from Austin, overcame a substantial financial disadvantage against Abbott, who entered the election with significant campaign resources and the advantages of incumbency. Her victory came despite months in which her campaign struggled to attract the same level of attention as the closely watched U.S. Senate contest between James Talarico and Ken Paxton.

The governor-elect also stressed that she intends to represent Texans regardless of their political affiliation or whether they voted in the election. The outcome was part of a broader Democratic breakthrough in Texas on November 3. James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race, giving Democrats their first Senate victory in Texas since 1988. Democrats also secured victories in other statewide contests, according to election coverage from KUT and KSAT.

Hinojosa is expected to take office in January 2027. In her victory remarks, she said the transition would begin immediately and promised to work across party lines, declaring that Texas had not ended one era of single-party rule simply to usher in another. Her message to Texans after the election centered on a promise that the governor’s office would serve the public rather than wealthy donors, political allies or special interests.

“I will serve you and only you. I will listen when you disagree. I will admit when I am wrong. And I will never forget who sent me here,” Hinojosa wrote.
