Texas – A HPD officer shot a suspect during a stolen vehicle investigation Monday night after officers said the person refused commands to exit the vehicle and made a movement that led them to believe a weapon may have been involved.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. on July 6 in the 4100 block of Westheimer Road in the Highland Village area of Huoston, according to the HPD officials. Officers were investigating a vehicle after a patrol officer ran the license plate of a black sedan and discovered it was connected to a stolen vehicle case out of Fort Bend County, KPRC reported.
Police said officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to leave the vehicle, but the person remained inside for approximately 25 minutes and did not comply with commands. According to investigators, the suspect then made a movement that officers believed indicated they may be reaching for a weapon, prompting an officer to fire.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a hospital, where police said the person was expected to survive. No officers were injured during the incident, ABC13 reported.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots as the confrontation unfolded. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Westheimer Road and Drexl Drive, an area within the Highland Village community.
The officers involved in the shooting have not been publicly identified. Houston police said the incident is being investigated by the department’s Internal Affairs Division and Special Investigations Unit, as is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
According to police, the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including what happened inside the vehicle before the shots were fired.
The incident comes as law enforcement agencies continue to investigate encounters involving stolen vehicles, which often require officers to balance recovering stolen property with responding to potential threats during enforcement actions.
Texas authorities have not released additional details about the suspect’s identity or whether any charges have been filed. Police said more information may be released as the investigation progresses.
The HHPD has emphasized that officer-involved shootings are reviewed through multiple investigative processes, including internal reviews and outside agency involvement when required. The results of those investigations will determine whether additional action is needed.
