Texas – Texas Sen. Ted Cruz criticized Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after comments about the deportation of a convicted offender sparked a new political debate over immigration enforcement, public safety, and the role of state pardons.
“These people are nuts,” Cruz wrote on X on July 11 in response to a post claiming Walz said he did not believe deporting an illegal immigrant convicted of indcently assaulting a 10-year-old girl would make Minnesota safer.
The controversy involves Tue Lue Vang, a Minnesota resident who was convicted in connection with the indecent assault of a child and later received a pardon from the Minnesota Board of Pardons. According to reports from CBS News and other outlets, Vang was later deported after federal authorities took action following the pardon.
Federal officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighted the case while criticizing the pardon decision, arguing that removing a person convicted of a serious crime was necessary to protect public safety. Rubio said federal authorities revoked Vang’s legal status and ensured his removal from the United States.
The case has drawn attention because of the intersection between state clemency decisions and federal immigration enforcement. While Minnesota’s Board of Pardons has authority over state-level convictions, immigration matters are handled by federal authorities.
Walz, who serves on Minnesota’s Board of Pardons alongside other state officials, has defended the clemency process and said decisions are made after reviewing individual circumstances, including rehabilitation efforts and other factors presented during the review.

Republican officials have criticized the decision, arguing that individuals convicted of serious crimes should remain subject to removal proceedings and that public safety should be the top priority. Cruz has repeatedly criticized Democratic immigration policies and has argued that stronger enforcement measures are needed nationwide.
The Texas senator has frequently used immigration and border security as major parts of his political messaging. He has supported policies focused on increased enforcement and has criticized Democratic leaders whom he says have failed to prioritize the safety of American communities.
The dispute comes as immigration remains one of the most politically divisive issues in the country. Republicans have continued to push for stricter enforcement policies, while Democrats and immigration advocates have argued that immigration decisions should also consider due process, rehabilitation, and individual circumstances.
The Vang case has become another point of conflict between Republican officials and Democratic leaders over how states and the federal government should handle cases involving immigrants convicted of crimes.
Cruz’s response reflects the broader Republican criticism of Walz and other Democratic officials over immigration-related decisions, while supporters of the clemency process argue that governors and pardon boards must have the ability to review cases individually.
The debate is expected to continue as lawmakers from both parties focus on immigration enforcement, public safety, and the balance between state authority and federal immigration responsibilities.
