Texas – Texas Senator Ted Cruz was pulled into a widening Republican foreign-policy divide after publicly pushing back against conservative commentator Tucker Carlson over U.S. involvement in Iran, exposing deeper fractures inside the GOP and tensions within President Donald Trump’s broader foreign policy approach.

The dispute escalated after Cruz directly criticized Carlson on social media, accusing him of becoming a “deranged, Leftist psycho” who “loves Sharia” law. His comments came in response to a post from the Tucker Carlson Network stating “Muslims love Jesus,” which was part of a broader exchange tied to recent political and religious commentary involving President Trump.

The discussion was partly triggered by controversy surrounding Trump sharing an AI-generated image that appeared to depict himself as Jesus. The post sparked backlash from some supporters, including Joe Rogan and former GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, leading Trump to delete it. Trump later said he did not remove it due to criticism and insisted the image was misunderstood.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also condemned the post, arguing it was offensive to religious figures and linking it to broader tensions over respect for faith traditions in political messaging.

Cruz has repeatedly clashed with Carlson over Iran policy. Carlson has criticized Trump-aligned rhetoric toward Iran and warned against escalation, while Cruz has defended a more assertive approach and strong alignment with U.S. allies in the region. The Texas senator previously said Carlson’s views were “to the left of [Sen.] Chris Murphy,” adding that Carlson’s rhetoric had become “anti-American” and increasingly extreme.

Carlson has also pushed back directly, accusing Trump of mocking religion and warning against language that could inflame tensions with Iran. Trump, in turn, dismissed Carlson in an interview, calling him a “low IQ person” and saying he prefers to “deal with smart people.”

The escalating exchanges between Cruz, Carlson, and Trump highlight a deeper ideological divide inside the Republican Party over foreign intervention, religious rhetoric in politics, and the direction of Trump’s “America First” approach to Iran.
