Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has welcomed a new criminal antitrust investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice into major meatpacking companies, describing it as a necessary step toward addressing long-standing concerns over industry consolidation and pricing pressures affecting ranchers and consumers.
In a statement released on April 21, 2026, Miller expressed support for federal scrutiny of what he described as a highly concentrated sector of the U.S. beef supply chain. He noted that a small number of dominant firms process the vast majority of beef in the country and argued that such consolidation warrants closer examination, particularly amid elevated grocery prices and ongoing challenges for cattle producers.
Miller stated that roughly four companies control about 85 percent of beef processing in the United States, a level of market share he said raises concerns about competition and fairness. He argued that this structure places pressure on ranchers while contributing to higher costs for consumers at the retail level.
The commissioner also emphasized broader concerns about food supply chain resilience and rural economic stability. He said that strengthening domestic ownership and increasing competition within the sector would help stabilize prices and improve outcomes for producers.
Miller referenced prior calls for federal action dating back to the Trump administration, stating that he has consistently advocated for increased oversight of the meatpacking industry. He characterized the current investigation as a positive development for accountability within the sector.
The comments come at a time when beef prices remain elevated, driven by factors including tight cattle supplies, drought conditions in key producing regions, and higher production costs. Miller suggested that while these pressures are real, they do not eliminate the need to examine whether anti-competitive practices may also be contributing to market conditions.
The Department of Justice has not released additional details on the scope or timeline of the investigation.
