Waco Fire Department issues safety tips for deep-frying turkeys this Thanksgiving

Waco, TX – The Waco Fire Department shared safety reminders for residents planning to deep-fry turkeys during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Key tips include:

  1. Fry outside only – Keep the cooking station away from houses, garages, and anything flammable.

  2. Thaw the bird completely – Ensure the turkey is fully thawed and dry to avoid dangerous oil splatters.

  3. Check your oil level – Fill the pot with water to cover the turkey, mark the waterline, then remove the turkey before adding oil to prevent overflow.

  4. Watch the temperature – Maintain oil between 325–350°F to avoid flare-ups.

  5. Lower the turkey slowly – Turn off the burner while lowering the turkey using a hook or lifter, wearing heat-resistant gloves, then turn the burner back on once the turkey is safely in the oil.

The department encouraged residents to stay safe, fry smart, and enjoy a crispy Thanksgiving turkey.
