WACO, Texas — Waco Regional Airport completed a full-scale emergency exercise on Wednesday involving a simulated aircraft crash, officials said.
The training exercise brought together airport personnel, mutual aid partners, and emergency responders to test coordination and response procedures in a controlled environment. Officials said the goal of the exercise was to ensure all agencies involved in an aviation emergency can communicate and operate effectively during a large-scale incident.
According to the City of Waco Public Information Office, the drill is part of required Federal Aviation Administration regulations that mandate commercial airports conduct a full emergency exercise every three years. The training is also necessary to maintain the airport’s commercial operating certificate.
The simulated scenario involved a mock aircraft crash at the airport. Emergency crews responded as they would in a real incident, practicing rescue operations, incident command coordination, and emergency communications. Officials said the exercise helped identify strengths and areas for improvement in response readiness.
More than 100 volunteers participated in the drill, playing the roles of passengers and family members. Organizers said their involvement helped create a realistic training environment, allowing responders to better prepare for the emotional and logistical challenges of a real aviation disaster.
Airport officials said the exercise was successful and provided valuable experience for all participating agencies. They emphasized that regular training is essential to maintaining safety standards and ensuring preparedness for any potential emergency at the airport.
The City of Waco thanked all participating agencies and community volunteers for their involvement, noting that collaboration between local partners is critical to maintaining safe airport operations and readiness for emergencies.
Officials said the airport will continue routine safety training and coordination exercises in the future as part of ongoing compliance and preparedness efforts.
