Texas – Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is facing criticism from Republican Sen. Ted Cruz after releasing a new campaign advertisement that Cruz described as an attempt to reshape the candidate’s image ahead of the 2026 Senate race.

“James Talarico’s consultants built him a fake Ford commercial because his real record doesn’t sell in Texas,” Cruz wrote on X. “A bad SNL sketch won’t make voters forget his stance that there are six biological sexes, his claim that ‘God is nonbinary,’ or a career spent pushing gender ideology on Texas kids.”

Cruz’s comments came after Talarico’s campaign released a new advertisement that uses a style similar to a traditional truck commercial, featuring the Democratic candidate presenting himself as a candidate focused on Texas values and everyday concerns. The ad quickly drew attention online and became the latest flashpoint in the increasingly competitive Texas Senate race.

The Texas Senate contest has become one of the most closely watched races in the country, with Republicans defending a seat in a state that has remained a GOP stronghold for decades. Talarico, a Texas state representative and former public school teacher, is running as the Democratic nominee, while Republicans are competing to determine their nominee.

Cruz’s criticism focused on several issues Republicans have repeatedly used in attacks against Talarico, including comments about gender and religion. Cruz referenced previous statements attributed to Talarico that Republicans have used in campaign messaging, arguing the new advertisement was designed to distract voters from those positions.

The criticism comes as both parties have increasingly turned to unconventional campaign advertisements in the Texas race. Political groups on both sides have used viral videos, online campaigns, and highly produced digital content to appeal to voters and define opponents.

Talarico has previously been the target of Republican attack advertisements, including ads that used artificial intelligence-generated content to portray him saying or doing things that did not occur. Fact-checkers have reported that some political ads targeting Talarico used manipulated or AI-generated material, raising broader concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in campaign advertising.

Talarico’s campaign has argued that Republican attacks are an effort to distract from issues he says matter to Texas voters, while Republicans have continued criticizing his positions on education, social issues, and other policy issues.

Cruz, who has held statewide office in Texas since winning his Senate seat in 2012, has previously acknowledged that Talarico presents a serious challenge in the upcoming election. In recent comments, Cruz said Talarico has a chance to make the race competitive and warned Republicans not to underestimate his ability to connect with voters, Salon reported.

The exchange highlights the growing battle over campaign messaging as both candidates attempt to define each other before voters head to the polls.

While Talarico’s latest advertisement focuses on presenting his message to voters through a more unconventional format, Cruz and other Republicans argue that the campaign is attempting to soften the candidate’s image ahead of a major statewide contest.

The Texas Senate race is expected to remain one of the most closely watched political contests of the 2026 election cycle as candidates continue releasing advertisements and attacking each other’s records.
