Waco, TX – More than a dozen middle and high school students were recently recognized by Waco Municipal Court Judge Bobby Garcia for their work in the city’s new Juvenile Teen Court program.
The students were recognized for serving as prosecutors, defense attorneys and jurors as part of the program, which gives young people an opportunity to take part in the justice system while helping their peers resolve certain citations.
The Teen Court program, launched by Garcia this year, marked its first year of operation in Waco Municipal Court. The program was designed to give young people firsthand experience with the legal system while allowing juveniles facing eligible minor charges to resolve their citations through Teen Court.
Students involved in the program take active roles in court proceedings. Depending on their assignment, they can serve as attorneys, conduct trials or participate as jurors for their peers.
Through those responsibilities, students gain experience in leadership, responsibility and decision-making while learning more about how the justice system operates.
More than 100 juveniles have participated in the program so far, according to the City of Waco. The cases handled through Teen Court have involved minor charges including traffic offenses, theft, disorderly conduct and minor violence.
The program gives participating students an opportunity to develop practical skills while contributing to a court process designed specifically for young people.
Garcia recently recognized the students for their work and commitment to serving their peers and the Waco community.
The City of Waco congratulated the students for their hard work and participation during the program’s first year.
