Waco, TX – Waco drivers should expect major changes on the SH 6 Twin Bridges beginning Sunday night as the Texas Department of Transportation prepares to shift traffic onto the northbound bridge.
TxDOT said the traffic switch will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 23, with crews and contractors moving all SH 6 Twin Bridges traffic onto the northbound bridge.
By Aug. 29, traffic will be shifted to a two-way, two-lane configuration that will remain in place through fall 2027.
The new traffic pattern will allow crews to begin reconstructing the southbound bridge as part of TxDOT’s $114 million project to reconstruct and widen the SH 6 bridges over Lake Waco.
Several additional closures will take place as part of the transition.
The southbound off-ramp to Midway Park and the northbound on-ramp past Fish Pond Road will be closed at the same time as the traffic switch.
TxDOT also said the north-to-south U-turn at the south end of the bridge will be temporarily closed from 7 p.m. Aug. 20 until 6 a.m. Aug. 21 as crews move equipment in preparation for the upcoming traffic shift.
The Waco Police Department shared the TxDOT alert with residents and motorists, urging drivers to be aware of the upcoming changes as crews begin the next phase of the bridge reconstruction project.
The two-way traffic configuration is expected to remain in place through fall 2027 while work continues on the southbound bridge.
