Texas – Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, sharply criticized Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico after a resurfaced video showed Talarico describing Christianity, Islam and other religious traditions as different pathways to the same fundamental divine truth.

“This is many things, but Christianity isn’t one of them,” Cruz wrote in a Sept. 8 post on X, accompanying his criticism with a quotation from the Gospel of John: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Cruz’s comments came after a video featuring Talarico began circulating again online. In the footage, Talarico discussed how he views different religious traditions and said he considers them “equal pathways to truth.”

“I find that they’re all kind of equal pathways to truth,” Talarico said in the video. He described the world’s faith traditions as forming a circle around what he called a “divine mystery of the universe,” with different religions using different names for that mystery.

Talarico specifically referenced God, Yahweh, Allah, Nirvana and the Great Spirit.

“Whether it’s God or Yahweh or Allah or Nirvana, the Great Spirit, whatever you call it, this is all, you know, different pathways to the same kind of fundamental truth of reality,” Talarico said.

The remarks have triggered a new round of criticism of Talarico’s religious views as he campaigns for the U.S. Senate in Texas. Talarico is a Democrat running in the 2026 Senate race and has made his Christian faith a visible part of his public identity and political message, per reports.

The controversy centers on the distinction between Talarico’s broader view of religious truth and traditional Christian teaching concerning the unique role of Jesus Christ.

In John 14:6, Jesus is quoted as saying that he is “the way and the truth and the life” and that no one comes to the Father except through him. Cruz cited that passage directly in responding to Talarico, making clear that he viewed Talarico’s comments as incompatible with traditional Christian doctrine.

Talarico’s comments do not appear to be a new position for him. Reporting on the resurfaced video has pointed to earlier statements in which he similarly discussed Christianity alongside other faith traditions.

In a 2021 Texas House invocation, Talarico referenced the Torah, Quran, Bhagavad Gita, Dharma and the First Epistle of John before concluding with a prayer referring to God “in all your many names,” according to reporting on his previous remarks.

His broader religious views have also drawn attention because Talarico has openly challenged conventional approaches to Christianity while continuing to identify himself with the faith.

A recent profile of Talarico described him as a progressive Christian, while other reports have highlighted his background as a Presbyterian seminarian and his efforts to incorporate Christian teachings into a progressive political message.

Talarico previously delivered a sermon titled “God is not a Christian,” in which he argued that God should not be confined by human religious labels and criticized what he described as Christian nationalism and attempts to establish a Christian theocracy in the United States.

That history has become increasingly relevant as Talarico faces Republican attacks over his religious views while challenging Republicans for a Senate seat.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is also running for the Senate, launched an attack ad this week focusing on Talarico’s previous statements about God, Jesus and the Bible. The ad accused Talarico of “weaponizing” Christianity for political purposes and highlighted several of his past comments.

The latest controversy, however, centers specifically on Talarico’s description of different religions as pathways to the same truth.

Conservative outlets characterized the remarks as Talarico rejecting the Christian belief that Jesus is the only way to salvation. Other coverage has described his position more broadly as religious pluralism — the belief that different religious traditions can provide paths toward a shared or ultimate truth.

That distinction is important when describing the video. Talarico did not appear in the surfaced clip saying the exact words “Jesus is not the only way to heaven.” Rather, he explicitly said that he considers different faith traditions, including Christianity and Islam, “equal pathways to truth” and described Allah and Jesus-related Christian concepts within a broader framework of different names and paths toward what he called the same fundamental truth.

Cruz’s response therefore framed the disagreement as a fundamental theological one. By invoking John 14:6, the Texas senator argued that the Christian teaching that Jesus is the exclusive way to God is incompatible with Talarico’s view that multiple religious traditions can lead to the same divine truth.

The dispute comes as religion has become an increasingly prominent part of the Texas Senate contest, with both candidates and their supporters using Talarico’s statements about Christianity to define the Democrat for voters.

For Talarico, the resurfaced comments have placed his interpretation of Christianity back at the center of the campaign. For Cruz, his response presented the issue as a straightforward question of whether Talarico’s theology is consistent with traditional Christian teaching.
