Waco, TX – The Waco Police Department is warning residents about scams involving individuals impersonating police officers or McLennan County Sheriff’s Office personnel to demand payment for alleged traffic violations, warrants or outstanding tickets.
Police said the scammers may contact victims through phone calls, text messages, emails or computer pop-ups, often pressuring them to send money immediately to resolve a supposed legal issue.
The department emphasized that police agencies and other official government entities will never demand immediate payment over the phone.
Officials also warned that similar scams may involve accounts and services such as Google, Amazon and credit cards.
Scammers can be convincing, making it important for residents to verify any unexpected payment request before taking action.
Anyone who suspects they are being targeted is encouraged to discuss the situation with someone they trust or contact the police department before sending money.
