Waco, TX – The City of Waco announced that the Cameron Park Zoo recently welcomed its first South African penguin chick at the zoo’s Penguin Shores pavilion.
According to officials, the chick hatched to parents Shirley and Tom.
Since the chick’s arrival, the pair has been sharing parenting responsibilities, including incubating, feeding, and protecting their newest addition.
Zoo officials said the birth is an important milestone as wild African penguin populations continue to decline.
Conservation efforts, including the Species Survival Plan at Cameron Park Zoo, are aimed at helping protect the future of the species.
