Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller marked School Lunch Hero Day on May 1, 2026, recognizing the contributions of school nutrition professionals who serve millions of meals to students across the state each day.
The annual event, observed on the first Friday in May, honors cafeteria teams responsible for providing more than 800 million meals to Texas students each year, including nearly 5 million meals served daily.
In a statement, Miller highlighted the dedication and skill required for the role, noting that these workers go beyond serving food by maintaining food safety standards, meeting strict nutrition guidelines, and managing complex operations while creating a welcoming environment for students.
The Texas Department of Agriculture encouraged schools, families, and communities to show appreciation through thank-you notes, announcements, and social media recognition.
Officials also noted that the department supports school nutrition teams throughout the year with training, technical assistance, and guidance on federal programs. Initiatives such as Farm Fresh aim to increase the use of locally grown products in school meals while supporting Texas agriculture.
Residents were encouraged to connect with local school nutrition departments to learn more about ways to support these essential workers.
