“He says he’s a Christian who hates Christianity,” Texas Gov. Abbott responds to James Talarico’s religious comments, warns voters may reject his views

Texas – “No way this guy gets elected in Texas,” Abbott wrote in a post on X. “He says he’s a Christian who hates Christianity. Says ‘Islamic Mystics’ shaped his faith. The only mystery is why he thinks the rest of Texas is like Austin.”

The governor’s remarks came in response to a report highlighting comments Talarico made during a 2024 interview on the State of Belief podcast, where the Democratic candidate discussed the role different religious traditions have played in shaping his personal faith. During that conversation, Talarico said he had learned as much about his Christian faith from Islamic mystics, including the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, as he had from Christian authors and writers, TNP reported.

The exchange has become the latest flashpoint in the increasingly contentious Texas U.S. Senate race between Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, with Republicans highlighting Talarico’s past comments on religion while Democrats accuse opponents of taking his remarks out of context.

Abbott’s criticism also referenced an earlier interview in which Talarico described himself as “a Christian who hates Christianity,” a remark that has resurfaced repeatedly during the campaign. Talarico has previously addressed criticism over several of his past comments, telling CBS News that some statements “missed the mark” and accusing Paxton of selectively clipping older remarks to distract from what he described as the attorney general’s record in office.

In the 2024 podcast discussion cited in recent reports, Talarico explained that studying writers from different faith traditions had strengthened, rather than replaced, his Christian beliefs. He pointed to Islamic mystics such as Rumi as examples of thinkers whose writings helped deepen his understanding of spirituality while remaining committed to Christianity.

The renewed attention on those comments follows weeks of Republican criticism surrounding Talarico’s public statements on religion. Conservative media outlets and Republican officials have repeatedly highlighted remarks he made over several years on Christianity, theology, and interfaith dialogue as the Senate campaign enters its final months.

Talarico, who serves in the Texas House of Representatives and is a Presbyterian seminarian, has frequently spoken publicly about faith during his political career. He has argued that Christianity calls believers to serve others and has often discussed how his religious beliefs influence his approach to public service, according to the Daily Wire.

His campaign has also defended his faith against Republican attacks. Earlier this year, campaign spokesperson Andrew Ennis said Talarico is “a devout Christian” who challenges what he views as political misuse of Christianity, arguing that critics have misrepresented his remarks.

Abbott’s comments illustrate how religion has become a significant issue in the Texas Senate campaign, with Republicans portraying Talarico’s theological views as out of step with many Texas voters. The governor’s reference to Austin echoed a common Republican criticism that the state capital represents more progressive political and cultural values than much of the rest of Texas.

The exchange also reflects a broader strategy by Texas Republicans to focus on Talarico’s past public statements in addition to policy differences. Supporters of Paxton have argued that the Democrat’s comments reveal a worldview inconsistent with the state’s conservative electorate, while Talarico and his allies have maintained that his remarks have been selectively presented without their broader context.

With the November election approaching, both campaigns have increasingly turned to issues of faith, culture, and identity alongside debates over border security, the economy, and government ethics, making religion one of several high-profile issues shaping one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate contests.
