Austin, TX – An Austin man was arrested on a murder charge after police said he fatally shot another man following a physical altercation at a residence early Saturday morning.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:17 a.m. on July 18 to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the 3200 block of Montopolis Drive.
When officers arrived, they found 31-year-old Tyris Rivers unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:28 a.m.
Detectives with the Austin Police Department’s Homicide Unit responded to investigate the shooting. According to investigators, the preliminary investigation determined that 29-year-old Jaquan Easley shot Rivers after the two were involved in a physical altercation at a residence.
Police said Easley remained at the scene following the shooting and was taken into custody without incident. He was later arrested and charged with murder.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the altercation or a possible motive.

According to the Austin Police Department, the case marks the city’s 35th homicide of 2026.
