Waco, TX – The Waco Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim people have outstanding traffic violations, tickets or warrants and must make an immediate payment.
Police said scammers have become increasingly convincing, with recent reports showing that some callers have used the real Waco Police Department address at 3115 Pine Ave. and a legitimate phone number belonging to a Waco police detective to make the calls appear authentic.
Authorities emphasized that these calls are scams.
Police reminded residents that law enforcement agencies and other government organizations will not demand immediate payment over the phone for alleged violations, tickets or warrants.
Anyone who receives a call demanding that money be sent immediately should stop and avoid providing personal or financial information.
Waco police advised residents to speak with someone they trust and independently verify the information before taking any action.
The department urged the public to be especially cautious when a caller creates a sense of urgency or threatens consequences unless payment is made immediately.
Police said residents should remember one simple rule when receiving suspicious calls: stop and verify before sending money.
