Waco, TX – A Waco man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly attacking a neighbor with a hammer, according to an arrest affidavit from the Waco Police Department.
Eddie Miles Cortez, 29, was booked into McLennan County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, and resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. on the 4000 block of Huaco Lane, when officers responded to a call from the neighbor. According to the affidavit, the altercation began when Cortez placed unwanted items, including toys and other debris, at the neighbor’s back door. When the neighbor asked Cortez to remove the items, he allegedly refused.
The neighbor then confronted Cortez about the items, prompting the suspect to pull out a hammer and approach the victim. As the neighbor attempted to retreat into his home, Cortez allegedly followed him, leading to a brief physical struggle outside the residence.
At some point during the confrontation, Cortez is accused of turning his attention to the neighbor’s car, using the hammer to smash both the driver’s side and front windows.
Police later apprehended Cortez, who allegedly resisted arrest. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to McLennan County Jail.
Cortez is currently facing serious charges related to the hammer attack, which police say was an unprovoked escalation of a dispute over the unwanted debris. Authorities have not yet released further details about the incident.
