Waco, TX – A Belton man was arrested on December 18 after fleeing from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle, leading to a high-speed pursuit that ended when he crashed into the front yard of a local residence, damaging an inflatable holiday decoration.
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, authorities responded to a multi-agency operation on Comay Circle, near the I-35 service road. During the investigation, law enforcement officers located a stolen vehicle from Hamilton County in a Walmart parking lot. Upon seeing the officers, the driver of the vehicle fled, initiating a brief but intense chase.
The pursuit ended when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the front yard of a home belonging to Ailehs Gaines, a resident of the area. The crash caused significant damage to an inflatable snowman decoration that was displayed on the property. Despite the destruction, no one was injured during the incident.
Gaines, who was at home at the time, described the frightening moment when her daughter, a senior in high school, opened the front door to head to school. “She walks to the front door, opens it, and starts screaming to the top of her lungs because we hear sirens outside,” Gaines said. “She could’ve walked out and been in the middle of it.”
Gaines expressed concern for her daughter’s safety, particularly given how quickly the situation unfolded. “That was my thought after seeing what happened. She could’ve been right in the middle of it,” she added.
The suspect attempted to flee on foot following the crash but was quickly apprehended by police. While his identity has not been released by authorities, he was arrested on multiple charges, though formal charges have not yet been filed.
In a moment of empathy, Gaines reflected on the potential reasons behind the suspect’s actions. “He probably could’ve got help and maybe it would’ve been something different,” she said. “He could’ve hurt a lot of people.”
While the incident was unsettling, Gaines said she was relieved that her family was unharmed. “I’m just thankful that we’re okay,” she noted.
The Belton Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident. The stolen vehicle and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s actions remain under investigation.
