Texas – Governor Greg Abbott announced that applications are now open for nearly $17 million in state grants aimed at expanding workforce education and training programs across Texas.
According to the announcement, the funding will support new, redesigned, or expanded short-term education programs focused on high-demand occupations. The initiative is designed to strengthen training pipelines at Texas colleges and technical schools.
Abbott said the grants will help institutions prepare students for good-paying careers while supporting the state’s long-term economic growth. He emphasized that investing in workforce education helps ensure Texas remains a national leader in job creation and economic development.
The funding will be distributed through three programs administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board: the Texas Reskilling and Upskilling through Education (TRUE) Grant Program, TRUE Pathways Design & Planning Grants, and the Texas Invests in Meaningful Employment (TIME) Grants.
Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser said the programs are intended to help students of all ages gain skills needed for in-demand careers, while improving collaboration between schools and employers and expanding access to affordable credentials.
Officials said eligible institutions include public lower-division colleges and technical schools offering workforce-recognized credentials. Programs supported by TRUE grants have previously included training for careers such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, medical assistants, and emergency medical technicians.
Application deadlines vary by program: TRUE Pathways Design and Planning grants close May 29, TIME program applications are due May 15, and TRUE Grant Program applications will open in July.
