Texas – Sen. Ted Cruz sharply criticized Tucker Carlson after the conservative commentator interviewed Hunter Biden, arguing that the former president’s son and Carlson now share similar political views and attitudes toward President Donald Trump.

“The least surprising development ever,” Cruz wrote on X on Aug. 8. The Texas Republican then argued that Carlson and Biden “believe the same things,” make similar “moral judgments” and oppose Trump. Cruz also made an antisemitic allegation about the two men, which was not supported by evidence in his post.

Cruz’s comments came after Carlson featured Hunter Biden as a guest on his show, an appearance that quickly attracted attention because of the political backgrounds of both men and Carlson’s increasingly public break with portions of the Trump-aligned movement.

The interview was released after Carlson promoted Biden as a guest, with coverage focusing on the unusual pairing. The Independent reported that the conversation included discussion of the Hunter Biden laptop controversy and Carlson’s changing views surrounding the issue, The Washington Examiner reported.

Biden has long been one of the most prominent targets of conservative criticism, particularly over his business activities, his personal struggles and the contents of a laptop that became a major political controversy during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Carlson, meanwhile, has undergone a significant political evolution since leaving Fox News. Although he remains a prominent conservative commentator, he has increasingly criticized Trump on several issues and has positioned himself alongside figures who have broken with the president.

That shift has fueled speculation about Carlson’s political future and whether he could support or participate in a third-party movement. Axios recently reported that Carlson had unveiled a 10-point political manifesto amid growing speculation about a possible third-party effort and tensions with Trump.

The Hunter Biden interview added another layer to that debate.

Biden expressed support during the interview for several figures who have become prominent critics of the Republican establishment, including Rep. Thomas Massie, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and commentator Candace Owens. PrimeTimer reported that Biden said he liked the three figures because he believed they had “woken up,” while Carlson also expressed support for Owens.

The comments were notable because Biden is the son of former President Joe Biden, while Massie and Greene have both had significant disagreements with Trump and the Republican establishment despite their conservative backgrounds.

Cruz’s reaction appeared to focus less on Biden’s individual comments and more on what he viewed as an emerging political alignment between Biden and Carlson.

The Texas senator has been a frequent critic of Carlson, particularly as Carlson has challenged some positions held by Trump and other Republican leaders. The two have previously clashed publicly over foreign policy and other issues.

Carlson’s changing relationship with the Trump movement has received increasing attention in recent months. While he was once a major voice for Trump among conservative voters, he has criticized the administration’s foreign-policy decisions and questioned some of the president’s political priorities.

That tension has become more pronounced as Carlson has cultivated relationships with politicians and commentators who disagree with Trump on issues including foreign intervention, Israel and the direction of the Republican Party, according to The Independent.

The Hunter Biden appearance therefore came at a politically unusual moment. A figure who spent years at the center of Republican attacks was appearing on the program of a conservative commentator who has increasingly challenged parts of the Republican establishment.

Cruz interpreted the appearance as evidence of a shared political outlook between Carlson and Biden. His post, however, represented the senator’s political assessment of the interview rather than an independent finding that the two men hold identical views.

The interview also demonstrated how Carlson’s platform has expanded beyond traditional partisan boundaries. His current program regularly features guests from different political backgrounds, and his recent political commentary has increasingly focused on challenging established alliances within both parties.

For Biden, the appearance provided another opportunity to discuss his views outside traditional Democratic media and to criticize figures he has opposed while highlighting conservative personalities he now says he respects.

The episode is likely to continue generating political debate because of the unusual combination of personalities involved. Biden remains closely associated with the Democratic Party and his father’s presidency, while Carlson remains one of the most influential voices on the American right despite his growing disagreements with Trump.

Cruz’s reaction reflects the broader fight over Carlson’s political direction and whether his recent criticism of Trump represents a temporary disagreement or a more fundamental break with the president and the Republican establishment.

As Carlson continues to build his independent media platform, his choice of guests and political positions is likely to remain a subject of intense scrutiny, particularly when those appearances involve figures who were once among the central targets of conservative criticism.
