Texas – Texas Sen. Ted Cruz predicted that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani could eventually replace Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the U.S. Senate, arguing that the Democratic Party is undergoing a major shift toward its progressive wing.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Cruz said he believes Schumer’s future in New York politics is uncertain and claimed the longtime senator would no longer be able to win a Democratic primary in the state. Cruz said he believes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could pursue a presidential campaign instead of challenging Schumer for his Senate seat, opening the door for Mamdani.

“Chuck Schumer, I believe, can never again win a Democrat primary in New York,” Cruz said during the interview. “I think he will not even run for reelection.”

Cruz also referenced discussions surrounding Ocasio-Cortez’s political future, pointing to polling he said showed her as a leading Democratic candidate in New Hampshire. He argued that if Ocasio-Cortez focuses on a presidential bid, Mamdani could become a leading figure in New York politics.

“My prediction: AOC will run for president, and Zohran Mamdani will replace Chuck Schumer in the Senate,” Cruz wrote in a post on X.

The Texas senator also posted that he was not celebrating the possibility of a more progressive Democratic Party, saying he believed it would be harmful for the country.

“Some Republicans are cheering that our opponents are crazy. I’m not,” Cruz wrote. “This is bad for America. I may disagree with Democrats on taxes and regulations, but this country needs two parties that actually love America.”

During his interview, Cruz said he viewed Mamdani as a powerful figure within the Democratic Party and argued that political polarization would be unhealthy if either party moved too far from the center.

“I think Mamdani is the single most powerful Democrat in the country,” Cruz said. He added that he wanted to see both parties remain competitive and focused on governing.

Cruz’s comments come amid broader discussions about the future of Democratic leadership and the influence of progressive lawmakers. Schumer, who has represented New York in the Senate since 1999 and has served in Democratic leadership for years, remains one of the most prominent figures in the party.

In recent months, speculation has grown among political observers about potential changes within Democratic leadership, including debates over generational change and the direction of the party. Some progressives have pushed for new voices to take a larger role, while Schumer’s supporters have defended his record and leadership.

Mamdani, who has gained national attention through his progressive political positions, has become a focus of conservative criticism and Democratic Party discussions. Cruz’s prediction does not represent an announced Senate campaign by Mamdani, and Schumer has not indicated that he plans to leave the Senate.

Cruz’s remarks were shared widely online after the interview, with his comments sparking debate over the future of New York Democrats and the direction of both major political parties.
