Waco, TX – The Waco Police Department is warning residents about ongoing phone scams in which individuals are falsely told they owe money for traffic violations or outstanding tickets and are pressured to make immediate payments.
According to the department, scammers are contacting victims through phone calls, text messages, emails, and computer pop-ups, often impersonating official government agencies. In some cases, similar schemes are also being used to target online accounts and financial services such as credit cards and major platforms.
Officials stressed that legitimate police agencies and government entities will never request immediate payment over the phone. They described the scams as highly convincing and urged residents to remain cautious if asked to “send money right away” to resolve an alleged issue.
Residents are encouraged to speak with a trusted individual or contact law enforcement directly before taking any action if they suspect fraudulent activity. The department emphasized that verifying the legitimacy of such requests can help prevent financial loss and protect personal information.
Authorities continue to urge the public to stay alert as phone and internet-based scams remain an ongoing concern across communities.
