Texas – Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday reacted to a proposed Oregon ballot initiative that he and critics say could dramatically change hunting, fishing, and animal-related practices in the state.
“This is exactly what happens when Democratic Socialists take power, they come for your way of life,” Abbott wrote in a post on X. “Not in Texas.”
Abbott said that in Texas, the right to hunt and fish is protected in the state constitution and pointed to constitutional carry as an example of state policy he says protects individual freedoms.
The comments come in response to Oregon Initiative Petition 28, a proposed measure that has gained enough signatures to move closer to the November ballot, according to multiple reports, including coverage from the Oregon proposal.
The initiative would significantly expand Oregon’s animal cruelty laws and has sparked controversy among lawmakers, industry groups, and political leaders. Critics argue the measure could effectively criminalize hunting, fishing, livestock production, and other animal-related practices, while supporters say it aims to strengthen animal welfare protections.
Under the proposal, activities such as hunting and fishing could be treated as violations of state animal cruelty laws, with exceptions limited to situations such as self-defense and veterinary care, according to reporting from outlets including the Daily Mail and other news organizations, New York Post reported.
Opponents have warned the measure could have wide-reaching effects on agriculture, outdoor recreation, and rural economies in Oregon. Supporters argue it reflects a shift toward stronger animal protection standards.
The initiative is still undergoing verification and would need to be formally certified before appearing on the November ballot, according to election officials.
