Local family celebrates first Thanksgiving after losing parents to COVID-19

WACO, TX — With the pandemic in full swing, this Thanksgiving will be tough for so many families in our country. For some like the Resendez family, it’ll be even tougher.

“Family is all you got at the end of the day. You don’t really know what you have until it’s gone,” said Marissa Resendez.

Their parents, Julia and Moses Resendez, Sr., died within 17 days of each other after catching the novel coronavirus. People in their community knew Julia and Moses well for their church, volunteer work and involvement.

For the first time in their lives, the Resendez children will have to celebrate Thanksgiving without them.

“It was unreal, and now it’s starting to sit in now. It’s kind of hard, and we’re asking God to give us strength,” said Moses Resendez, Jr.

Normally, the entire family would meet up their parents’ house for their mom’s home-cooked meal.

“She has a famous dressing that everyone loved, and she was the only one who had the recipe. She was old-fashioned. Everything was from scratch. It was all about family and God,” said Moses, Jr.

It was also about football.

“Cowboys were my dad’s favorite team. We will get us all together so we can give thanks to God, watch the Cowboys and just laugh and get ready to laugh,” said Gabriel Resendez.

Even though the family will miss out on their mother’s dressing and their father’s jokes, they’re thankful their parents are in a better place. They say their family will continue their parents’ legacy.

“They’re not here, but the Spirit is still with us,” said Moses, Jr. “I know they wouldn’t want us to give up. They would want us to keep going on. It’s a sad day on Earth, but it was a celebration in Heaven because they made it home.”

The Resendez family wants to encourage everyone to wear your mask, social distance, stay safe and cherish every moment with your family.
